Abstract

Type collections of fossils in private hands and in local museums do not exist in Norway, where the recognition of the permanence of university museums means that types are deposited there. The organization of the I type collections in the Palaeontological Museum of the University of Oslo is discussed in detail. The philosophy behind the need for primary and secondary type collections is outlined as is the need for the centralization in Norway of type material collected by both national and foreign palaeontologists.
