The Editorial Board of Palaeontology and Papers in Palaeontology is seeking to expand the pool of Handling Editors to include and involve early-career researchers as Associate Handling Editors. Through this process we aim to:
- Give early-career researchers the opportunity to gain experience with editorial work in major, international journals;
- Increase the diversity of the Editorial Board.
We invite early-career researchers, who will self-define but are expected to have already obtained their PhD, to apply to be Associate Handling Editors for the journals. They will be assigned a discipline-specific mentor from among the existing Editorial Board, and will be given a training seminar on the processes of handling papers and using editorial software. The Associate Handling Editors will be assigned up to two or three papers per year, and will be expected to make final decisions in consultation with their mentor. Associate Handling Editors will be appointed for three years with a review point after 12 months.
We aim to recruit four or five Associate Handling Editors in the first instance, who will be chosen based on a scoring rubric and application form (see below), focused on disciplines in which we need additional editors. Applicants will also be asked to briefly explain why they are interested in becoming an Associate Handling Editor for the Association’s journals and how this fits with their career plans. Applicants will have the option of providing protected characteristics data that will be taken into account in the decision-making process, after ranking based on the criteria below, with the goal of maximising the diversity of the pool of Associate Handling Editors and, if possible, membership from the Global South.
Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprising the four members of the Editorial Board and the Publications Officer. Each application will be graded against the following criteria:
- Disciplinary area within palaeontology
- Previous experience of publishing and reviewing
- How becoming an Associate Handling Editor would support the applicant’s career
Deadline for Applications: April 1, 2022.
