Project Description

The increase of complexity in the Cambrian explosion ranks among the most profound transitions in life history—even if the detailed trajectory of this fundamental macroevolutionary is obscured by biases in the fossil record. Exceptional Burgess Shale-type deposits only record the aftermath of the explosion, whereas Small Shelly Fossils (SSFs) only document biomineralizing organisms. Small Carbonaceous Fossils (SCFs)—the non-mineralised counterparts of SSFs—offer a unique opportunity to observe mineralizing and non-mineralizing taxa throughout the Cambrian explosion.
